Month of the Holy Souls: The Catholic Church dedicates the entire month of November to praying in a special way for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. The Holy Souls (also called the Faithful Departed) are members of the Church who await the purification of their souls before joining the saints in heaven for all eternity. Specifically, they are called the Church Suffering (the saints in heaven are the Church Triumphant, and the saints on earth are the Church Militant ).The poor souls in purgatory cannot pray for themselves or do anything to hasten their entrance into heaven, but we can pray for them as an act of charity.
The need and duty of prayer for the departed souls has been acknowledged by the Church at all times as “it is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from their sins.” (2 Maccabees 12:46). Through our prayers, the dead are cleansed of their sins, so that they may enter heaven.
The celebration of the Mass is the highest means the Church can provide for charity for the dead, but we can also relieve their suffering through our prayers, sufferings and penances.
So let us pray for the faithful departed:
Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of god, rest in peace.
The Book of the Names of the Dead is available by the candles at the front of the church to write in the names of your deceased loved ones and friends. A mass will be offered for all the names listed at the end of the month.
Adult Ministry: The Adult Ministry will be holding another workshop at Origin on Thursday November 16 at 3 pm. The topic will be Peace. This Ministry has already conducted a number of very successful workshops, with topics such as gratitude and forgiveness. The number of participants is growing: at the last session there were just over 20. This Ministry is for adults 50 and up and workshops last 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Coffee, etc. Is provided afterwards.
Prayer Goup: Would you like to part of a prayer group? Myrna Ewanek at 403 609-4408 or firstname.lastname@example.org would love to hear from you as she is wanting to belong to a small group interested in developing their prayer life.
The only definite is that the meetings will not be held on a Monday or Wednesday evening.
